borderlands
The borderland regions of Czechia, the erstwhile “Sudetenland”, used to be mostly populated by Germans who established many industrial enterprises there in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the German population’s expulsion after WWII, the factories were nationalised. Over the subsequent decades, some were operated and expanded, some were left to decay. Martin grew up in the North and observed the region’s waning industrial heritage in his youth. He recently revisited the region and photographed the remnants of its traditional industries. In the border regions, land is less valuable than in the big cities, and many interesting old factories have survived the relentless pace of “brownfield redevelopment” and destruction. Encouragingly, some are even being carefully restored and repurposed by enthusiast new owners.
