the borderLANDs

The borderland regions of Czechia used to be known as “Sudetenland”, and were mostly populated by ethnic Germans who established many industrial enterprises there in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the German population’s forced expulsion after WWII, the factories were nationalised. Over subsequent decades, some were operated and expanded, some were left to decay. Martin grew up in the North. The region’s waning industrial heritage was part of the background of his youth. He recently revisited the region and started capturing the remnants of its traditional industries. This being the border region where land is less valuable than in the big cities, many interesting old factories have survived the relentless pace of “brownfield redevelopment” and destruction. Encouragingly, some are even being carefully restored and repurposed by enthusiast new owners.
